Daryl Rich pitched a gem to lead Portland to victory over the Houston Rangers, 2-1. Portland reliever Luis Vasquez got the win, raising his record to 4-5. Victor Pacheco was tagged with the loss. By defeating Houston, the second-place Ducks improved to 52-53.

Portland took a 2-1 lead on Derek Darby's 18th double of the season. The run-scoring double, which Darby hit in the bottom of the eighth, left Houston pitcher Victor Pacheco visibly frustrated.

"That's baseball," said Houston manager David Fields. "Sometimes the other team plays better than yours."
