| Ducks Go Down to Defeat, 5-3 | Starting pitcher Mario Chaidez pitched well enough to help the Chicago Hawks beat the Portland Ducks, 5-3. The winning pitcher was Chaidez, now 11-6. He tossed 5 innings of 2-hit ball, while walking 5 and fanning 7. Chicago has an impressive 74-27 record.
The Ducks had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Hawks going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the slugging second baseman Matt Shinn came to the plate. Shinn hit a grand slam home run on a 1-0 fastball from Portland hurler Leo Marquez. It was Shinn's 44th home run of the year.
"It was a good effort all around," said Shinn.
