Orlando Defeated By Empire, 8-3 | The Orlando Orange could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Jonathan Smith into a win. Instead, the New York Empire prevailed, 8-3. Smith threw 5.2 innings allowing 4 runs. Willie de Leon got the win, improving to 11-4. He pitched 5.1 innings, giving up 5 hits and 3 runs, while striking out 7 and walking 3. New York is now 62-43, 4½ games up in the Independent North Division.
Enrique Paucar had a big 2-run home run for the Empire in the bottom of the third inning. With New York trailing 3-2 and a runner on 1st, he got a fastball from Jonathan Smith and swatted a home run to center. It was his 21st home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Empire ahead, 4-3.
"Nice win for us," said Paucar. "Now we'll go after the next one." | | | | |
