The Chicago Hawks rode a solid performance from 29-year-old starting pitcher Derrick Hightower to a win, beating the Portland Ducks, 3-2, at Hawks Park. Chicago reliever Casey Basler picked up the win, upping his record to 4-0. Josh Young absorbed the loss. Jeff Slack earned the save, his 18th.

Rogelio Romero, who finished 4th in the IL in wins above replacement with 4.2 last year, took Portland hurler Josh Young deep in the bottom of the eighth. His solo home run put the Hawks on top, 3-2. In all, Romero had 1 single in addition to the home run, while going 2 for 3.

"Every loss stings," said Portland manager David Fields. "This one is no exception."

Chicago has now won 4 straight, while the Ducks have lost 3 in a row.
