| Hawks Squelch Pioneers Offense in Shutout Win | In a low-scoring game between the Chicago Hawks and the San Francisco Pioneers, pitcher Matt Gardner was masterful on the mound. The Chicago left-hander spearheaded his team's 3-0 win. Gardner, the winner, moves to 6-0. He threw 5.2 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 6 and giving up 5 walks. The Hawks improved to a lofty 31-11.
The outcome was still in doubt with two out in the top of the fourth inning, but Gardner was able to pitch out of a jam. With runners on 1st and 3rd and San Francisco trailing 2-0, Gardner retired George Katsman, who grounded out.
